Healthy Green Smoothie Recipes
I started drinking green smoothies about a year ago after I went to see a Naturopath, Dr. Alana Hendrickson in Kelowna, and my iron levels were extremely low! My low iron levels were starting to impact my daily life because I always felt extremely fatigued and that made me irritable (not a good combo!). So, part of my treatment plan entailed having a green smoothie every day. At first, I was horrified at the thought of consuming copious amounts of spinach every single morning. But surprisingly, the smoothie tasted fantastic. The pineapple completely overpowered the spinach; if I couldn’t see the colour of the smoothie, I wouldn’t know there was any spinach in it! Out of all the healthy green smoothie recipes out there, I wanted to share the tastiest and healthiest out there for you to try!
Ingredients
- 2 cups of spinach
- 1 cup of pineapple
- 1 Banana
- 3 tablespoons of hemp seeds
- 2 cups of water (you can substitute this for apple or orange juice for some extra tastiness, but this is a lot more sugar, so this can be used as special treat once in a while)
Health Benefits
Spinach: there are so many benefits to all of the leafy-green vegetables; spinach is a great source of iron, calcium, and magnesium. It’s important to pair a vitamin-C rich food such as a citrus food like pineapple since it helps improve the absorption of all of the great nutrients that spinach has to offer your body.
Pineapple: this fruit is loaded with nutrients, contains disease-fighting antioxidants, and it’s naturally occurring enzymes can help ease digestion.
Banana: there are so many benefits of bananas that include potassium which is great for heart health and blood pressure, and they’re a great source of vitamin C and vitamin B6.
Hemp Hearts: they deliver protein into your body as well as healthy fats and fiber. There has also been studies done that show empirical evidence of hemp seeds reducing symptoms of PMS (premenstrual symptoms). Hemp seeds are incredibly healthy with lots of different types of nutrients and they are definitely a superfood that your body will thank you for!
Of course it’s difficult to keep up having a green smoothie every morning at first, but once you see the difference in how you feel once you are consistently having them, you won’t want to stop!
